ARTIST STATEMENT
The driving force behind my work is an enduring connection to nature: raw, fascinating, whimsical, and ever changing. In my eyes, nature is the true art form and I just want to be a part of it. I did not choose my subject matter, it chose me.
Utilizing a variety of painting techniques, my work examines the emotional response to nature, and an imaginary personal connection that bubbles up inside me. Using expressive colors stolen from nature's palette, I observe the changing light, casted shadows, and add thick paint application to create rich textures. I do not limit myself to one concept, and paint the ideas as they evolve. My desire is for the viewer to be drawn in to share my emotional response, while finding comfort and joy through their own connection.
Using heavy body acrylic paints, I carefully apply layers to my canvas. The application becomes more loose as the nature of the painting transpires. The overlapping provides more depth in the painting as it would if you were looking out into a garden. The use of brushes, pallet knives, and even my fingers lends itself to more interesting markings, like those you might find in nature. It can be a playful process. I am sometimes driven to include representation of a divine messenger in my art. The action of painting is my dialogue with nature. I relish in the fulfillment it provides my soul!
